You’ve probably heard of kefir, kombucha and drinking vinegars. What are they and
what do they do for you?
These three beverages are a part of a hot trend of drinking probiotic-rich beverages.
What are probiotics? Probiotics are good bacteria that line your gut, encourage nutrient
absorption, reduce inflammation and support your immune system. You can take
probiotics as a supplement – or you can explore great food choices that are high in
probiotics including fermented beverages made right here in BC.
Kombucha is a fermented, lightly effervescent, sweetened black or green tea
drink. You can buy kombucha by the single serving – or by the growler. Craft
kombuchas are being made around the province.
It's so popular that there are boozy kombucha options popping up as well as uses
as mixer in cocktails for those looking for a hard twist. Forbes says kombucha is
considered the fastest-growing product in the functional beverage market, with
sales estimates of $1.8 billion by 2020.
Kefir is a cultured milk product that is made by fermenting milk with yeast and a
variety of bacteria. It has high nutrient and protein contents. With roots in Russia
and Eastern Europe, it’s popular in many countries around the world and is
growing in popularity in BC. If you are new to kefir, make sure you keep it
Shrubs and Drinking vinegars are a classic example of what’s old is new again. If
your grandmother ever told you to drink Apple Cider Vinegar, then you know
about this trend. If you've never had a shrub before, it's just about the most
refreshing thing you can think to drink - especially in the summer.
It starts with a syrup that’s a combination of vinegar, fruit, and sugar. The fruit
tastes like its truest self and the vinegar cuts right through it. It’s served by
adding the shrub to the glass, and then topping it up with bubbles (sparkling
water or ginger ale) to make it bright. Ask your server or natural food store
about these as healthy drinks or cocktails with a twist.
The new wave of local kefirs, kombucha and drinking vinegars are outside the box.
Whether they will make you happier or healthier are something you can explore, but we
know they will leave you wanting more.
